How to find out if you have a timing belt or chain?

Find out the quickest way to see if your vehicle has a timing belt, timing chain, or wetbelt

Not sure whether your car has a timing belt, timing chain, or wet belt? You’re not alone. Many drivers only find out when a garage mentions replacement.

In this guide, we’ll explain:

• The difference between timing belts, timing chains, and wet belts
• The quickest way to see which one your car uses
• Typical replacement intervals

• Common symptoms to look out for
• What replacement usually costs in Northamptonshire
• What to do next if yours is due

To put it simply, the quickest way to see if your vehicle has a timing belt or chain is to check your vehicle handbook guide. You'll also find the recommended interval for when your belt should be replaced.

The core difference between a timing chain and a timing belt

(In simple terms)

In short, timing chains and timing belts do the same job. They make sure the engine’s valves open and close at exactly the right moment. That timing is crucial for smooth performance, fuel efficiency, and preventing engine damage.

The difference comes down to two things:

Material
• Timing belt: Reinforced rubber
• Timing chain: Metal

Location
• Belt: Outside the engine, behind a plastic cover
• Chain: Inside the engine, lubricated by oil

Timing chains generally last longer, but they are more expensive to replace if they stretch or fail.

A wet belt does the same job as a standard timing belt, but it runs inside the engine oil. That design was meant to improve efficiency and reduce noise. But in reality, some engines are notoriously known for experienced premature wear and even failure.

If you think your vehicle might have a wet belt, see our wetbelt guide here.

How to check if your vehicle has a timing belt or timing chain

There are three simple ways to check if your vehicle has a timing belt or timing chain.

  1. Check your owner’s manual (most common) - This will confirm the system type and recommended interval.

  2. Look under the bonnet

-Timing belts usually sit behind a removable plastic cover.
-Timing chains are hidden behind sealed metal casings.

  3. Ask a reliable mechanic  - If you’re unsure, send us your reg details and we’ll check for you.

How to tell if your car has a wetbelt

The easiest way to find out if your car has a wet belt is to check your owner’s manual, which will confirm whether your engine uses a wet belt, timing belt (cambelt), or timing chain. If you’re unsure, send us your registration number and we’ll check it for you. We regularly confirm wet belt systems for drivers across Northamptonshire.

Common car models that use a timing chain

Replacing a timing chain for a BMW vehicle (known for timing chain stretch)

Timing chains are made of metal and run inside the engine. They usually last longer than belts, but if they stretch or fail, they’re more expensive to replace. Common car-models that use a timing chain include...

  • Many BMW & MINI petrol and diesel engines

  • Most Mercedes 4- and 6-cylinder engines (2015 onwards)

  • Many modern Audi TFSI engines

  • Mazda Skyactiv petrol and diesel engines

  • Most Toyota hybrids

  • Certain Ford 2.0 EcoBoost engines

Chains don’t usually have a scheduled replacement interval, but they can still stretch or develop tensioner problems over time.

If you’re hearing a rattling noise on cold start, it’s worth getting it checked.

Common car models that use a timing belt (cambelt)

Cambelts are made of reinforced rubber and sit outside the engine behind a plastic cover. They require replacement at set mileage or age intervals. Examples of engines that use timing belts include:

  • Many VW Group 1.0 & 1.5 TSI engines

  • Renault & Dacia 1.5 dCi

  • Some Volvo Drive-E engines

  • Various older Subaru boxer engines

  • Certain Vauxhall CDTi diesels

What cars have wet timing belts?

Wet belts are used in a range of popular petrol and diesel engines, particularly smaller, turbocharged models. The most popular ones we fix for Northamptonshire drivers are Fords, Pegeouts and Vaxhalls. Click here to discover what common wetbelts have.

How often do timing belts and chains need replacing?

  • Timing belts (cambelts) usually need replacing between 40,000 and 100,000 miles, or every 4–6 years.

  • Timing chains don’t usually have a fixed interval, but can start to stretch or rattle anywhere from 80,000–120,000 miles, depending on maintenance.

However, mileage isn’t the only factor. We regularly see belts needing replacement earlier when:

  • Oil changes have been delayed

  • The car does mostly short trips

  • The vehicle is over the age limit even if mileage is low

Is my timing belt failing?

A worn or overdue cambelt may cause:

  • Rough idling or engine vibration

  • Engine misfires

  • Trouble starting

  • A high-pitched squealing noise

  • Visible cracking or fraying (if accessible)

Important: Cambelts don’t always give warning signs. Many fail without noise which is why following the recommended interval is critical.

Is my timing chain failing?

Timing chains warning signs include:

  • Rattling noise on cold start

  • Engine management light

  • Loss of power

  • Misfiring

  • Difficulty starting

If you hear a persistent rattle from the engine, especially on start-up, don’t ignore it. Chain stretch can lead to serious engine damage if left unchecked.
